Government Job Age Limit & Category Relaxation Explained
How age limits and category relaxations work for government jobs in India — SC/ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD and ex-servicemen relaxation, the cut-off date rule, and common mistakes.
Age limit is the first eligibility check for any government job — and the one most candidates get wrong. Here's how age limits and relaxations actually work.
The cut-off date rule
Your age is calculated as on a specific cut-off date mentioned in the notification (not the date you apply). Always read this date carefully — being a day over on the cut-off can make your form invalid.
Standard category relaxations
Relaxations are applied on top of the upper age limit. Indicative figures (always confirm the exact notification):
| Category | Typical upper-age relaxation |
|---|---|
| OBC (non-creamy layer) | +3 years |
| SC / ST | +5 years |
| PwBD | +10 years (additional, stacks with category in many cases) |
| Ex-servicemen | As per rules (service period + a few years) |
| EWS | Usually no extra relaxation (same as General) |
State governments may set their own relaxations — for example, state PCS exams often have higher upper limits and extra relaxations for state-domicile candidates. See how to become an SDM.
Worked example
If a post's upper age limit is 30 for General:
- An OBC candidate can apply up to 33.
- An SC/ST candidate can apply up to 35.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the age is counted from the application date — it isn't.
- Forgetting that relaxations need valid certificates (caste, PwBD, etc.).
- Missing that attempts can also be capped (as in UPSC) — see how to become an IAS officer.
Check the documents you'll need
