How to Become an SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) in India
Two clear routes to becoming an SDM — through the UPSC Civil Services Exam and through the State PCS exam — with eligibility, selection stages and how the postings differ.
An SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) is a key revenue and administrative authority at the sub-division level — handling land revenue, magistrate duties, elections and local administration. There are two routes to the chair.
Route 1: Through UPSC (as an IAS officer)
If you clear the UPSC Civil Services Exam and are allotted the IAS, you typically serve as an SDM / Assistant Collector in the early years of your career as part of field training and posting. This is the faster track to the role, but it requires clearing one of the toughest exams in the country — see our IAS officer guide.
Route 2: Through the State PCS exam
Most SDMs enter through their State Public Service Commission (PCS) exam — for example UPPSC (Uttar Pradesh), BPSC (Bihar), MPPSC or RPSC. The top posts in a State PCS exam are usually Deputy Collector / SDM.
| Step | What to know |
|---|---|
| Conducting body | Your State PSC (e.g. UPPSC, BPSC) |
| Education | Graduate degree in any discipline |
| Age | Varies by state (commonly ~21–40 with relaxations) |
| Stages | Prelims → Mains → Interview |
The State PCS selection process
- Prelims — objective screening papers (General Studies + a CSAT-style aptitude paper).
- Mains — descriptive papers on General Studies and, in some states, an optional subject.
- Interview — a personality test before the final merit list.
The top rankers in the state merit list are allotted Deputy Collector / SDM; lower ranks get other allied services (DSP, BDO, Tehsildar, etc.).
UPSC SDM vs State PCS SDM
- Cadre: UPSC route → IAS (all-India service); State PCS route → State Civil Service.
- Promotion ceiling: State PCS officers can be promoted to the IAS over time through the state cadre.
- Difficulty: UPSC is nationally competitive; State PCS is competitive within the state.
